Abstract

The paper begins by looking back at a book entitled “The World in a Hundred Years”, published in 1910. The following section then examines when media linguistics established itself as a discipline and which forms of media use were previously the focus of research. Following this retrospective, the paper turns to a new area of media use: human-machine interaction. In this section, the focus is on written interaction with large language models (such as ChatGPT)—and thus on a topic that is becoming increasingly significant in media linguistics. Section 4 outlines some topics that media linguistics will address in the future and how AI research relates to them. The outlook concludes with references to the development of strong AI (known as Artificial General Intelligence), which will once again present media linguistics with new challenges.
